Image for Photography Junkies, Do Not Miss This Opportunity to Visit the Henri Dauman: Looking Up Exhibit

Explore The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum for a chance to view photographs from the latest exhibit, Henri Dauman: Looking Up! Make plans to view it with family and friends this Friday, December 27th starting at 10:00 a.m.

Henri Dauman’s photography documents some of the most important events and personalities of the 20th century, from the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley, to Buddhist priests in Vietnam and the Castro revolution. His images capture the American experience during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Born in France, Dauman was only 9 when his father was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp where he passed that same year. Dauman and his mother escaped and hid for several years. His mother died when he was 14, leaving him an orphan.

At 17, he was invited to New York City by his uncle. “He asked if I wanted to come and live in the United States, and I said, ‘sure.’ I had been dreaming of New York, seeing it in the movies and photographs. It’s such a photographic city. It’s like a big movie set.” For more than four decades, he worked with publishers and magazines such as the New York Times, New York Magazine, Newsweek, Smithsonian, and Town & Country. Dauman’s work has exhibited at leading galleries and his prints are held in public and private collections throughout the world.
